Statement: Asperger Syndrome: A Necessary Clarification
In light of the frequent use of the term “Asperger Syndrome” in the media and the resulting confusion or lack of awareness that can arise around this issue, “Asperger para Asperger” wishes to make some essential clarifications.
Firstly, it is crucial to emphasize that Asperger Syndrome is not an illness. The term “syndrome” refers to a set of characteristics or traits, not an ailment in itself.
We, people with Asperger’s Syndrome, face particular challenges, with socialization being one of the most noticeable. However, it is essential to recognize that, like everyone else, we possess a blend of traits, strengths, and abilities. These peculiarities do not keep us alienated or absorbed in a parallel reality; on the contrary, many times, it is these traits that enable us to achieve our academic, professional, and personal goals.
Throughout our 7-year journey, and based on scientific evidence, I share with you 10 primary strengths that we would highlight from this condition:
Attention to detail: Many individuals with Asperger’s have an incredible ability to focus on minute details, which can be especially valuable in fields like research, programming, arts, and sciences.
Outstanding memory: Particularly for data, facts, and figures. This photographic memory can be highly useful in numerous professions and activities.
Intense passion: When we are interested in a subject, we can quickly become experts, dedicating time and energy to learn everything we can about it.
Direct honesty: We value sincerity and tend to communicate clearly and unambiguously, avoiding social games or deception.
Loyalty and commitment: When we establish a relationship, whether it’s friendship or professional, we tend to be extremely loyal and reliable.
Logical and analytical thinking: We have the ability to analyze situations and solve problems with a logical approach, which is noteworthy.
Creativity: Often, we have unique ways of seeing the world, leading to innovative solutions and original perspectives in various areas.
Persistence: When we set a goal, we work tirelessly to achieve it, showing admirable dedication.
Sensitivity: Despite potential difficulties with socialization, many individuals with Asperger’s are profoundly sensitive and empathetic, connecting deeply with art, music, and nature.
Autonomous learning ability: Thanks to our curiosity and passion, we can often learn on our own, seeking information sources and assimilating content through self-directed means.
Although the formal diagnosis of Asperger’s Syndrome began in 1994, individuals continue to be diagnosed at different stages of their lives. Therefore, we believe it is of utmost importance that society at large seeks to inform itself and understand two essential aspects:
- Asperger’s Syndrome is not an illness or affliction.
- People with Asperger’s do not isolate themselves from society; they live and actively participate in the world, just like any other individual.
We appreciate the public’s interest and curiosity in learning more about Asperger’s Syndrome. We invite everyone to approach with an open and empathetic mind to discover the stories, challenges, and triumphs of those living with this syndrome, and to also inform themselves through our solutions such as the podcast “Tuning in with Autism,” Asperger para Asperger Social and Educational Club, our blog, and the recent 2nd World Asperger Meeting in 2023, among other initiatives from our social enterprise, Asperger para Asperger.
Together, we can build a more inclusive and understanding world.
